Coconut Oil – Does Wonders for Your Skin

From the minute we’re born, most of us, particularly in Trinidad and Tobago, our parents started massaging us from head to toe with nothing except for all-natural coconut oil.  When it came to baby formula, pampers and even our baby bottles only the best brands were suitable but when it came down to our skin, our parents didn’t want anything from a store, they would source someone from way before to get that homemade, organic, heavenly smelling, coconut oil.

Coconut oil has been tried and tested throughout history and its benefits to skin are endless!  Here are just a few of the ways that we can use this in our regular skincare routine for healthy and supple skin!

  1. As a Moisturizer -  Coconut oil is fat extracted from raw coconuts that contain emollient properties that hydrate and protect the skin.  These include linoleic acid (vitamin F), which helps skin retain moisture, and lauric acid,  which has antibacterial properties making this an excellent product for dry skin.  Use coconut oil all on its own or mix in with your daily moisturizer.
  2. To Prevent Skin Infections - Coconut oil has antimicrobial properties that protect against harmful microorganisms including acne, cellulitis, folliculitis and athlete's foot that are all caused by bacteria or fungi.
  3. To Treat Acne – Acne is an inflammatory condition and coconut oil reduces inflammation in the body to aid in the treatment of acne.
  4. To Prevent Stretch Marks and Wrinkles – Stretch marks are found in both men and women, but more commonly affect women, almost up to 40-90% of women.  The trick is to catch them young, when they are pink or red, and prevent them from damaging the skin any further.  Coconut Oil’s anti-fungal, anti-inflammatory, anti-viral, and anti-microbial qualities get absorbed by the skin and heal it.  It is also rich in Vitamin E which can help prevent the onset of wrinkles and can prevent skin from sagging.

Here’s what even better, Coconut Oil is not only good externally be internally as well.  It also:

    1)      Strengthens Your Immune System

    2)      Improves Heart Health

    3)      Reduces Hunger

    4)      Boosts Brain Functions

    5)      Protects and Nourishes Hair

Perfect Eyebrows

It has been said that eyebrows are the single most important feature of the face and this certainly has merit as your brows introduce you before you even speak.

You all know what I’m talking about, when you can’t get the time to get your eyebrows shaped you yourself can’t even stand looking at it and you don’t even feel like wearing your make-up.  We look at pictures of celebrities sometimes and think how do their eyebrows look sooooo good?  Is it tattooed, is it micro-blading? I’ve good news, for you no matter what they are doing your eyebrows can look just as good following these very simple tips.

  1. Get your eyebrows shaped by a professional. It doesn’t even matter if you wax, tweeze or thread this is super important in keeping a great shape.
  2. Follow the golden ratio in filling in your brows. The diagram below may seem complicated but it’s really very simple. Your brows should begin at Point A directly above your nostrils, arch at Point C which runs in a straight line through the center of your iris and the tip of your nose and finally the tail end should be in line with the outer corner of your eye and nose.
  3. Use the right tools – To fill in your brows you need an angle brush and a spoolie. There are some companies that offer this in one tool as seen below that is perfect for doing your brows. First, use the spoolie to brush the hair upwards in the direction of hair growth. Then, use the angle brush with brow powder or brow gel to fill in. Use the spoolie to brush over the hairs again for a natural finish.
  4. Shade from light to dark – If you don’t want to end up with eyebrows that look harsh and stamped on make sure the inner corner of your brow is the lightest and the end the darkest. Shading too heavily anywhere, especially the middle can make you look angry or older.

Concentrate the color in the center and fill in your arches moving out, then come back and gently shade the inside third.

See below helpful video tutorial on how to achieve those perfect eyebrows.

So get your brow game on and remember, some are born with great eyebrows, some achieve great eyebrows and some have great eyebrows drawn upon them!

The Liquid Lipstick Craze has certainly revolutionized the make-up industry with almost every brand releasing a matte liquid lipstick collection, from Anastasia Beverly Hills to Maybelline New York, everyone has jumped on the liquid lipstick bandwagon.  However, there’s none that hits the mark on variety, affordability and quality such as Sacha’s Lip Velvet.

Taking Care of Your Beautiful Skin

There’s no denying that beautiful faces start with beautiful skin.  How does one get that radiant, glowing skin that’s bouncy to touch? Does it have to have to be something that you’re born with?

The fact is, it’s not just a matter of DNA, a daily skincare routine will definitely get the job done.  I know everyone is busy, but the truth is beautiful skin is a lifelong process and if you want gorgeous skin 30 years from now the choices you make today will help make it happen.  Acne scars, skin discoloration, and deep wrinkles are just some of the skin problems that a simple skincare routine can help you avoid.  It’s as simple as these 3 easy steps:

Cleanse:

Every day our skin comes into comes into contact with dirt and other pollutants that should be gently removed by washing our face twice daily. Use a cleanser that is suitable to your skin types, such as a foaming liquid for acne, oily or combination skin, or a cream cleanser for dry skin.  This simple step prevents clogged pores, dullness, and even acne.

Tone:

A toner is a fast-absorbing liquid that should follow your cleanser and has several benefits.  It closes pores and tightens cell gaps after cleansing to reduce the penetration of impurities and environmental contaminants while correcting and balancing your skin’s PH level.  It is an additional cleanser as it removes excess dirt, traces of oil, make-up, chlorine and other minerals present in tap water.

Moisturize: It is important to note that our skin loses its natural ability to retain moisture as we grow older.  Doctors recommend using moisturizers year-round and for all skin types as its function is to hydrate and soften the skin while preventing water loss through the outer layers of the skin.

Include these 3 quick and easy steps in your everyday routine to reveal skin that’s healthy, glowing and just irresistible to touch!

Getting That Look You Love…

So we all absolutely love makeup don’t we, that perfect finish, every flaw erased, that radiant glow, the confidence it brings and of course the anticipation of seeing the reaction of others with their jaws dropping to the floor or not saying a word but their eyes are saying it all.  Yes, makeup is all of that, an amazing gift to mankind but knowing that you love it doesn’t say how you’d like your look.  Here are some tips on different looks and when its best to wear them!

The Natural Look

This is what some may refer to as their everyday make-up.  It’s the perfect look for being out and about for the office, going out to lunch, or if you’re going out to a casual first date to the movies.  You can get this by a good foundation, perfect brows, little eyeliner, a bit of contour, and nude or natural lips.

Glam Make-Up

This is what we mean when we say we’re getting dressed up and going out!  This look is suited for Formal Events, Dinners, A Fancy Nightclub and if you’re going to the Prom!  For this look go heavier on the foundation, add contour, highlighter, glitter eyeshadow, some bright and exciting lip color and of course this look could not be complete without you Lashes!!

That Bold Color! – What You Should Know Before Taking That Bold Step

When it comes to hair color, these days we are really spoilt for choice. We cannot resist this hot new trend.

The Vibrant Reds

The Luxurious Purples

The Sophisticated Greys

The Balayage of Beautiful Blonds

It has become an extension of our personalities and the rich, alluring look that it brings makes it oh so tempting.  But before you take this bold step here are some things you should know:

  • Pre-Lightening Is A Must – Caribbean people naturally have dark hair and for the bright hair color to deposit, the base hair needs to be lightened.  This means that your natural hair will need to be bleached into blond which can damage your hair.  However, don’t worry this just means that you will have to do the proper maintenance and upkeep to prevent your hair from breaking and drying out which can be done at your local salon who will also supply you with the products you need to treat your new hair.

  • Fashion Colors Fade Easily – These colors don’t usually last a long time even if you’re using the right shampoo and conditioner.  The bleached blonde will soon start showing up which simply means prepare to have your hair retouched regularly.

So if you want to get that color, do it! This is just to get you prepared so you can ask the right questions, get the right products, and give your hair the luxurious treatment that it deserves.  You can even use your trips to the salon for touch-ups as an opportunity to get one of the several hair treatments that are appropriate for your hair type because hair is beautiful and after all your hair deserves it!
